Caries-free Adulthood

The „Caries-free Adulthood” project is implemented in the central macro-region (Mazowieckie and Łódzkie Voivodeships) by the Medical University of Warsaw and the NEUCA Foundation for Health as part of the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development 2014-2020 co-financed by the European Social Fund.

Tooth decay is a common health problem. It is referred to as a disease of civilisation or a social disease. The main factors responsible for the development of caries are bacteria producing acids that destroy enamel in the process of breaking down sugars present in food products.

Tooth decay can contributé to headaches and sinus pain, the development of rheumatoid arthritis, and kidney problems. Caries also increaseṡ the risk of diabetes, heart attack and stroke.

The poor dental health among Poles is due to the low awareness of the population in terms of care of oral̨ hygiene, proper oral care and proper diet.

Take a deep breath

“Take a deep breath” is a project that promotes smoking cessation, increasing public awareness of COPD, reducing morbidity and premature mortality from respiratory diseases, as well as reducing the health damage caused by smoking.

The project is also intended to implement a nationwide educational programme on COPD. The implementation of the project covers the south-eastern macro-region, i.e. the Małopolskie, Podkarpackie and Świętokrzyskie voivodeships, and envisages a range of activities that can benefit not only compulsive smokers, but also:

  • people working in environments where they are exposed to harmful factors that predispose them to COPD,
  • health and safety professionals,
  • nurses and occupational health physicians.

The NEUCA Foundation for Health, in partnership with the John Paul II Krakow Specialised Hospital in partnership with Smog Alert, is implementing the ‘Take a deep breath’ programme. The project aims to raise awareness of the triggers of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which most often affects active and passive smokers, residents of localities particularly polluted by smog and employees of companies with harmful working conditions (high dust concentrations).

Residents of the Świętokrzyskie, Podkarpackie and Małopolskie voivodeships were given the chance to perform free preventive examinations for lung diseases, receive counseling in effectively quitting smoking and raise awareness of harmful factors in the work environment. The project is implemented with European Funds under the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development 2014 – 2020 together with the Krakow John Paul II Specialist Hospital and the Krakow Smog Alarm.

An anti-smoking outpatient clinic has been opened at the Krakow John Paul II Specialist Hospital.
The clinic offers consultations with an addiction treatment specialist, a psychologist, a psychiatrist as well as spirometric tests. There are also educational activities on the prevention of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

The clinic’s services are free of charge for patients, as they are funded by EU funds as part of the project ‘Take a deep breath’, implemented under the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development 2014-2020. The total amount of funding is almost PLN 2 million.

It is estimated that there are more than 2 million COPD patients in Poland, of whom 15 000 die annually, which is the third most common cause of death in our country.
